50 years young

Huddersfield North Scouts 1972-2022

We are celebrating our Golden Anniversary in 2022. To mark the occasion, everyone will get a special anniversary badge to wear on their uniform (if they wear uniform) and we are running an Anniversary Challenge.

If you have any questions, to register for activities or submit your activity results please email us at 50@hnscouts.org.uk

Monthly programme and anniversary challenge activities

We will run or provide an activity idea for each month of 2022. Taking part in certain of the activities (those where you should be able to do them in your own meeting times) will contribute towards points in our Anniversary Challenge – and prizes! The League Table will be added here soon. Details of the programme activities will be made available the term before they are planned. You can see the Spring Term programme below with Summer and Autumn to follow in the spring and summer respectively.

January: Indoor Caving

We are building an indoor caving course at the DRC. Contact us to book a slot for your section evening between Monday, 17 and Friday, 21 January (with possibility of Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 January).

February: Scavenger Hunt

Complete our Going for Gold or Scavenger Hunt challenge on one of your normal meeting nights during the month. Points for taking part, with bonus points available.

March: All About Cakes

Make, bake and/or decorate a birthday cake and submit pictures for judging – points for the winning submission from each section and across the sections. For those who want to make this a bit more of a challenge, consider a Submissions to be received during March to 50@hnscouts.org.uk

April: St. George’s Event

2-5pm (timings vary by section), Sun., 24 April.
We’ll combine our traditional St. George’s Day Celebration with an activity. Full details and register here.

May: Let the Sunflower Competition begin

We’ll give everyone all they need to grow a Sunflower. Young people can plant these during their section evening and then have a competition amongst themselves and across the District to grow the tallest Sunflower and also the biggest Sunflower. Details of when to measure and submit measurements will follow. Links to Gardener activity badge.

June: Pioneer a structure

The June programme challenge revolves around Pioneering. For the younger sections we’d love to see what you’re able to build whether that be in mini-pioneering form or something larger. For the older sections, can you make a Pioneering structure that holds the team that made it? Points for the best designs and most people held. If you need some support let us know via 50@hnscouts.org.uk, and don’t forget there’s equipment available at the DRC.

July: catch-up

Take time in July to revisit any ideas from the first half of the year you haven’t had time to take part in – and send us your pictures. Also, don’t forget we want to hear how well your Sunflowers have done around 8 May.

HNGoes… is an expedition camp, 1-3 July. Seamus will be sharing details with Scout leadership teams.

August: School’s Out!

No programme planned for August as it’s the school holidays.

September: Cook Outside

We’re looking for sections to take part in this key Scouts skill and cook something outside – whether on a camp fire, camp stove or some other way. Why not a banquet?

October: recruitment film

We would like sections to put together some sort of recruitment film. What and how is up to you.

Night Hawk returns and introducing Swift Hawk see details here

November: I’m a Celebrity

A #YouShaped activity, arranged by the District Youth Commissioner team – undertake challenges to win stars. We’ll be in touch with section leadership teams to arrange a slot.

December: Wrap Up

We’re working on the details of this, but hoping to have an event where we bring each section together for some friendly competition, perhaps with a seasonal theme.

Termly challenges

We’re also planning some longer-term challenges – one per term. Details are below.

Spring Term

Starting from January, and continuing through the year, how much can your Group raise (for Group funds) by getting people to collect 5p and 50p coins?

Summer Term

How many hours of service can your Group give to the community over the Summer Term? A great way to do this is using the British Mountaineering Council’s Litter Collection kits. More details in the spring.

Autumn Term

Poem or song writing competition – submit entries during Autumn Term. More details in the summer.

Celebration for adult volunteers

We are looking at the possibility of an evening’s celebration for adult volunteers across the district. It will take place in the autumn or early winter 2022. Details to follow.
